Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles worldwide in the third quarter, about 25,000 more than Wall Street expected, according to the company's Q3 2026 production and deliveries report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The result was still 2.1% below the 497,099 deliveries Tesla reported in the third quarter of 2025, which was an all-time quarterly record.

Analysts had been looking for 461,974 deliveries. The 24,558-vehicle beat, or 5.3%, is the kind of surprise that can move the stock, and Tesla's quarterly numbers are one of the few hard data points investors get before earnings. The company said it will post its full third-quarter results after the market closes on Wednesday, October 21, with a question-and-answer webcast at 5:30 p.m. Eastern.

Model 3 and Model Y carry the quarter

Tesla built 464,391 vehicles in the quarter and delivered 486,532, so it sold roughly 22,100 more cars than it made. That means inventory came down, which Electrek notes is the second quarter in a row it has done so.

The mainstream cars did the heavy lifting. Model 3 and Model Y made up 478,237 of the deliveries, or 98% of the total. The "other models" line, which covers Cybertruck, Semi and the remaining Model S and Model X inventory, delivered 8,295 vehicles. Electrek reports that is down 48% from 15,933 a year earlier.

The year-over-year picture is mixed

Against the third quarter of 2025 the comparison is tough for a specific reason. U.S. buyers rushed to take delivery before the federal EV tax credit expired on September 30, 2025, which pulled demand forward into that quarter. Electrek reports that elevated gasoline prices appear to be making up some of that lost U.S. demand this year. AAA's national average for regular reached a record $4.33 in September, as Drive Edition reported.

Over the first nine months of 2026, Tesla has delivered 1,324,681 vehicles, up 8.8% from 1,217,902 in the same period of 2025, according to Electrek's tally. So the year as a whole is still running ahead even though the single quarter fell short of last year's peak.

Energy storage missed

Tesla deployed 13.7 GWh of energy storage products in the quarter. Electrek puts the analyst expectation at 15.9 GWh, which makes storage the one headline number that came in under forecast. The company's report notes that deliveries and deployments are only two measures of its financial performance, and that results also depend on pricing, costs and exchange rates.

For shoppers, the practical reading is that Tesla sold more cars than it built this quarter, which shrinks the pool of unsold inventory. The company said nothing about pricing in this report. The October 21 earnings call is the next chance to hear its outlook directly.
