Toyota has updated the Crown for 2027, moving three of its four grades to the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System and freshening the styling. The XLE, Limited and Nightshade now use THS 5 and gain standard paddle shifters, while the Platinum keeps the turbocharged Hybrid MAX powertrain. Toyota announced the changes and full pricing on July 23. Prices start at $41,640 for the XLE, and all-wheel drive remains standard on every Crown.
Two hybrid powertrains
THS 5 pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with two motor-generators through a continuously variable transmission, plus a separate rear motor for Electronic On-Demand AWD. Toyota quotes an EPA-estimated 40 mpg combined for these grades but did not list a system horsepower figure in the announcement. An electronically controlled brake system blends regenerative and friction braking to recover more energy. These grades ride on MacPherson struts up front, a multilink rear suspension and swing-valve shock absorbers, and every Crown offers Normal, Eco, Sport and Custom drive modes.
The Platinum's Hybrid MAX combines a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with a six-speed direct-shift automatic for 340 net hp and 400 lb-ft. It uses Full-Time Electronic AWD with an eAxle and comes standard with Adaptive Variable Suspension, Dynamic Rear Steering and a Rear Comfort mode that softens settings for back-seat passengers.

Styling and equipment changes
Every 2027 Crown gets a newly sculpted rear bumper and satin-finish HEV and AWD badges, and a black paint called Inked joins the palette. The Platinum adds standard red brake calipers and a black window surround, and its two-tone paint now has a body-color trunk lid under the black roof. The Nightshade adds black badge overlays. Inside, the Limited switches to full Saddle Tan seats, and Saddle Tan becomes an option on the Platinum.
Standard equipment includes leather-trimmed seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. The Limited now comes standard with a Panoramic View Monitor, Traffic Jam Assist capability and Digital Key capability, the last two requiring connected-services trials or subscriptions. The Platinum adds a 10-inch head-up display and a hands-free power trunk.
What buyers should know
The Nightshade costs $755 less than the Limited and includes 21-inch matte-black wheels, a fixed panoramic roof and JBL audio, but Toyota's grade lists leave out the Limited's Panoramic View Monitor, Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist and Front Cross-Traffic Alert. The Crown is built at Toyota's Tsutsumi plant in Japan. Hybrid components are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles and the hybrid battery for 10 years or 150,000 miles, and ToyotaCare covers scheduled maintenance for one year or 10,000 miles. Toyota did not give a dealer arrival date in the announcement, but Toyota.com already lists the 2027 Crown from $41,640.
