General Motors, LLC is recalling 1,559 Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks from model years 2016 and 2017 due to a potential air bag inflator defect. The affected models include the 2016-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500, 2016 Chevrolet Sierra 2500, 3500, and 2016-2017 GMC Sierra 1500. The issue involves the left or right roof rail air bag (RRAB) inflator, which may have a detached end cap or a ruptured sidewall.
If the inflator end cap detaches or the inflator ruptures, compressed gas can escape and propel parts into the vehicle cabin, increasing the risk of injury to occupants.
To fix the problem, dealers will replace both roof rail air bag modules free of charge. GM plans to begin mailing owner notification letters on November 9, 2026. Owners can also check if their vehicle is included in the recall by searching their VIN on NHTSA.gov starting September 24, 2026.
What owners should do
- Check your vehicle identification number (VIN) at NHTSA.gov/recalls to see if your truck is affected.
- Contact your local Chevrolet or GMC dealer to schedule a free replacement of the roof rail air bag modules.
- Watch for the official recall notification letter from GM, expected to arrive starting November 9, 2026.
- Call Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 for more information.
