Volkswagen revealed the ID. Tiguan on Oct. 9, an all-new electric compact SUV that takes over from the ID.4 and its coupe-roofed sibling, the ID.5. VW says more than 950,000 of those two models have been built. The ID. Tiguan goes on sale in Europe in early 2027, sold alongside the gas and hybrid Tiguan, and Volkswagen has confirmed it is planned to succeed the ID.4 in North America.
That last part matters to American buyers. Volkswagen stopped building the ID.4 for the U.S. market in April, according to Car and Driver, leaving dealers to sell down inventory. In a September statement quoted by AutoGuide, VW said it "will share North American timing and additional market-specific details in due course," and it has not yet said which versions will come here or where they will be built. The European cars come from VW's plant in Emden, Germany.
Power, range and towing
The ID. Tiguan rides on an updated version of VW's electric platform, which the company calls MEB+. Three drivetrains are planned, all using a 58- or 77-kWh battery. Volkswagen quotes a WLTP range of up to 600 km, or about 372 miles. The European WLTP cycle is more generous than the EPA's, and Car and Driver estimates the long-range model would land around 316 miles on the U.S. test.
2027 Volkswagen ID. Tiguan drivetrains (European specs)
| Version | Drive | Battery | Output | Max towing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Rear-wheel drive | 58 kWh | 140 kW (190 PS / 188 hp) | 1,800 kg (3,968 lb) |
| Long range | Rear-wheel drive | 77 kWh | 210 kW (286 PS / 282 hp) | 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) |
| 4MOTION | All-wheel drive | 77 kWh | 220 kW (299 PS / 295 hp) | 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) |
WLTP range up to 600 km (372 miles) depending on version. U.S. specs and EPA ratings have not been announced. Sources: Volkswagen; Car and Driver hp conversions.
Cargo space is up to 534 liters, about 19 cubic feet, behind the rear seats, and there is now a small 32-liter front trunk. Four trim levels are planned in Europe: Trend, Life, Style and R-Line.
A cabin that brings the buttons back
Volkswagen says it built customer requests into the ID. Tiguan, and the cabin shows it. There is a row of physical climate buttons under the 15-inch center screen, a volume knob on the console, real buttons on the steering wheel and, according to Car and Driver, a switch for each of the four windows on the driver's door instead of the ID.4's two-switch setup. Traditional door handles replace the flush units.
Screens still dominate. A 10-inch driver display and the 15-inch touchscreen can be joined by an optional 12-inch passenger display with a privacy mode, so the driver cannot see it. Other options include massaging and ventilated front seats and a Harman Kardon audio system. Driver aids include one-pedal driving and Connected Travel Assist, which can recognize traffic lights.
"The Tiguan is our best-selling model worldwide, and the ID.4 and ID.5 are among our most successful electric cars. The ID. Tiguan brings these two success stories together." — Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand
What U.S. buyers should expect
No U.S. price has been set. In Europe the ID. Tiguan starts at 42,695 euros, which Electrek converts to about $47,800. Car and Driver expects the U.S. to get at least the all-wheel-drive model, but VW has not confirmed a lineup. For now, shoppers who want a compact electric VW are choosing from remaining ID.4 stock, and anyone willing to wait should plan on a 2027 arrival at the earliest.
