Lucid Group built 2,954 vehicles in the third quarter and delivered 3,806, the company said Oct. 5, as it deliberately slowed its Arizona factory and sold cars it had already built. Deliveries topped production by 852. Lucid said the gap reflects a planned inventory reduction that is part of an operating reset aimed at $1.4 billion in cash-flow improvements this year.

Production fell 38% from the second quarter's 4,774 vehicles and 24% from 3,891 a year earlier. Deliveries slipped about 4% from the second quarter and 6.7% from the 4,078 Lucid delivered in the third quarter of 2025. It was the third straight quarterly decline in output and the lowest since the first quarter of 2025, shortly after production of the Gravity SUV began.

One shift, fewer cars, less inventory

The third quarter was the first since Lucid cut its AMP-1 plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, from two shifts to one in June. That move was part of a restructuring that also reduced Lucid's U.S. workforce by about 18%, which the company expected to save about $158 million a year. Output had peaked at nearly 7,900 vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2025 before dropping to 5,500 in the first quarter of this year.

The $1.4 billion target breaks down into roughly $600 million to $800 million from vehicle inventory, $500 million from capital spending and $200 million from operating expenses, according to figures Lucid gave with its second-quarter results in August. New CEO Silvio Napoli has been blunt about the company's record. On that August call he said Lucid had "launched products before they were ready" and "underinvested in service."

How Lucid compares with Rivian and Tesla

The contrast with other U.S. EV makers is sharp. Rivian, reporting Oct. 2, built 19,751 vehicles and delivered 19,248 at its Normal, Illinois, plant in the first full quarter of R2 production, its best quarter yet, and reaffirmed 2026 delivery guidance of 65,000 to 70,000. Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles, beating the analyst consensus of 461,974 but down 2.1% from a year earlier, when buyers rushed to beat the expiration of the federal EV tax credit.

What it means for buyers

Lucid's push to turn existing inventory into deliveries shows up in its offers. As of Oct. 6, its website was advertising a Gravity Touring lease from $749 a month for 36 months, plus a $1,000 accessories credit and a $3,500 discount for first-time EV buyers, with conditions attached.

The cheaper model many shoppers are waiting for is further out. Lucid announced the Cosmos midsize SUV in March with a starting price under $50,000 and a claimed 300 miles of range, but Napoli pushed its launch to 2027, "most likely the second half," in August. A camouflaged Cosmos prototype was photographed on U.S. 101 in California in pictures published Oct. 5. Lucid will report third-quarter financial results Nov. 9.
