Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 208,724 SUVs because a bolt that holds the steering rack to the subframe can corrode and break, which can lead to a cracked steering rack housing and a loss of steering control. The recall covers the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan, the 2018–2019 Volkswagen Atlas and the 2019–2021 Audi Q3. Volkswagen reported it to NHTSA on September 11, 2026, as recall 26V-590. The company's recall numbers are 48LG and 48VT.

Only vehicles built with a specific steering rack are included; others in the same model lines used a different rack and are not affected. Volkswagen says production changes between June 2018 and July 2021 eliminated the condition in all of the affected U.S. models.

How the failure develops

Moisture can get into the area around the right-side steering rack mounting bolt. Over the vehicle's service life, the bolt can corrode until its head fractures. The rack is then held to the subframe at only one mounting point, and continued loading can crack the steering rack housing. Volkswagen's testing and field reports indicate the housing is most likely to fracture during parking or low-speed maneuvering, when steering loads are particularly high. The company says the condition may be detectable by unusual metallic rattling or knocking noises from the front axle area.

The investigation began in October 2024 with a field report from outside North America, followed by similar reports in August and December 2025. Testing in spring 2026 suggested the risk was mostly limited to parking and low-speed situations, but in August 2026 Volkswagen found that a cracked housing may not be immediately apparent to the driver, and the case went back to its product safety committees. Volkswagen and Audi decided to recall the vehicles on September 4, 2026. The company says it knows of no crashes, injuries, warranty claims or field reports tied to the issue in North America, and it estimates that 1% of the population has the defect.

The fix

Dealers will replace the right-side steering rack mounting bolt with a new bolt that has a highly corrosion-resistant polymer coating, free of charge. Volkswagen scheduled dealer notification for September 16, 2026, the same day VINs became searchable on NHTSA.gov, and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on November 10, 2026. Volkswagen customer service can be reached at 1-800-893-5298.

That leaves roughly two months between the filing and the first owner letters. In the meantime, owners of the affected SUVs should check their VINs and pay attention to front-end noises, particularly during parking and other low-speed maneuvers, where Volkswagen says a housing fracture is most likely. Volkswagen began evaluating alternative bolt coatings in September 2025, and the coated replacement bolt is the only change the remedy makes.
