Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 49,958 Tiguan SUVs from the 2025 model year because a software error can make the body control module reset while the vehicle is being driven. If it resets, the ignition may switch off and the engine can stall. The campaign is NHTSA recall 26V587, Volkswagen number 57KL, and the company filed its report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on September 10, 2026.
This is a noncompliance recall, meaning the vehicles fail to meet federal safety standards, rather than one prompted by a pile of crash reports. Volkswagen says it is not aware of any crashes, fires, injuries or deaths linked to the problem, and has no warranty claims on it. The fix is a software update, and dealers have been able to do it since September 17, 2026.
What the software does wrong
The body control module is the computer that manages many of a vehicle's electrical functions. In the affected Tiguans, Volkswagen's filing says a software issue can reset it unexpectedly. A reset may switch the ignition off, causing an engine stall and loss of certain controls, telltales, exterior lighting and the rearview camera.
That is why NHTSA lists it against four federal standards: FMVSS 101 on controls and displays, FMVSS 102 on transmission shift lever sequence and starter interlock, FMVSS 108 on lighting and FMVSS 111 on rear visibility. The agency's consequence statement says an unexpected stall, loss of lighting or warning lights, or a failed rearview camera can increase the risk of a crash.
Volkswagen traced the cause to a fault control manager inside the module that was not set up correctly. Certain error-correcting code memory errors could trigger a reset, the company says, because of specific error-handling code. The supplier is Continental, and the affected software is versions 0324 and 0325.

Only 2025 Tiguans built in that spring-and-summer window are included. Volkswagen says the recalled vehicles differ from other Tiguans because they were built with specific module software, and it says the condition was corrected in production in calendar week 36 of 2025. Volkswagen estimates all 49,958 vehicles in the population have the problem.
How the recall unfolded
The first sign was a test vehicle in January 2025, when the ignition switched off while driving. Volkswagen analyzed it with the supplier through mid-2025. Its product safety committee reviewed the issue that fall and decided to keep monitoring, since it was unclear whether more cases would turn up. A small number of possible cases appeared in other markets between October 2025 and April 2026, none in the United States, and there is no diagnostic trouble code for the failure, which made claims hard to match to the cause. On September 2, 2026, the brand safety committee decided on a recall because failures could not be ruled out.
The remedy is an update to software version 0326 at no charge. Because the vehicles are still under the new vehicle limited warranty, Volkswagen is not offering a reimbursement plan. NHTSA lists owner letters as expected on November 6, 2026, although Volkswagen's dealer notice mentions an October mailing. Owners do not have to wait: VINs have been searchable at nhtsa.gov/recalls since September 17, and customer service is at 1-800-893-5298, using recall number 57KL.
