Toyota calls the Tacoma America's best-selling midsize pickup for more than two decades, and the fourth-generation truck that arrived for 2024 gave it a thoroughly modern base. It rides on the TNGA-F platform shared with the Tundra, Land Cruiser and Sequoia, most trims get a coil-spring multi-link rear suspension, and power comes from a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder, with or without hybrid assistance. Changes for 2026 are minor: Heritage Blue paint, a TRD Pro-only Wave Maker color, a black front logo on TRD trims, 18-inch TRD wheels with 32-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires in the TRD Off-Road i-Force Premium Package, and a tow hitch that is now standard on SR XtraCab models.
The real decision is which of the 11 grade-and-powertrain combinations is worth the money. The spread runs from a $32,245 SR XtraCab to a $64,450 TRD Pro, and the sweet spot sits closer to the middle than the bottom.
Price and trims
Toyota's full-line price list, updated Oct. 2, 2026, starts the Tacoma at $32,245 for a 4x2 SR XtraCab, $100 above the $32,145 starting price Toyota announced in November 2025. Add a $1,745 delivery, processing and handling fee. Buyers choose between XtraCab (SR, SR5 and TRD PreRunner only) and Double Cab bodies with 5- or 6-foot beds, plus 2WD, part-time 4WD or, on Limited, full-time 4WD with a locking center differential.

Our pick is the TRD Off-Road i-Force Max at $47,335. It costs $300 more than the hybrid TRD Sport and $3,720 more than a gas TRD Off-Road Double Cab 4x4 with the automatic and 5-foot bed ($43,615). Both TRD Off-Road versions get Bilstein piggyback-reservoir shocks. The hybrid adds 48 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque, 33-inch Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, a standard 2,400-watt AC power supply in the cab and bed, and better EPA figures than a gas 4x4 automatic (23 mpg combined versus 21).
Powertrains, towing and fuel economy
The standard i-Force engine makes 278 hp and 317 lb-ft with the eight-speed automatic. With the six-speed manual, offered on select i-Force models and fitted with rev-matching, output drops to 270 hp and 310 lb-ft. The i-Force Max hybrid pairs the same 2.4-liter turbo with an electric motor for 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. It is optional on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited and standard on TRD Pro and Trailhunter. Maximum towing is 6,500 pounds and payload tops out at 1,705 pounds, with both figures depending on configuration.
Fuel economy is respectable rather than remarkable. On fueleconomy.gov, the best gas versions (2WD automatics) are rated up to 21 mpg city, 26 highway and 23 combined, while 4WD automatics are rated 19/24/21 and the 4WD manual 18/23/20. The hybrid is rated 22/24/23. That ties the best gas truck on combined mileage, so the case for i-Force Max is torque and onboard power, not lower fuel bills. Hybrid buyers do get extra warranty coverage: 8 years/100,000 miles on hybrid components and 10 years/150,000 miles on the hybrid battery, on top of Toyota's 3-year/36,000-mile basic and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage.
Cabin and technology
An 8-inch touchscreen is standard and a 14-inch screen is available, both with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hybrid models add a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Limited trims bring heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats, a head-up display, a power moonroof, a digital rearview mirror and JBL audio with a removable Bluetooth speaker, and Adaptive Variable Suspension is now standard on every Limited. The TRD Pro's IsoDynamic Performance front seats use an air-over-oil damping system meant to steady occupants over rough ground.
For towing and trail work, Toyota offers an available trailer brake controller, Trailer Back Up Guide with Straight Path Assist, a wireless trailer camera, CRAWL Control, Multi-Terrain Select and an available locking rear differential. Every Tacoma gets Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which bundles automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, full-speed adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, automatic high beams and Proactive Driving Assist.
Safety ratings
Crash results are mixed. NHTSA gives the 2026 Tacoma Double Cab four stars overall, including five stars for side impact and four for rollover, but only three stars for frontal crash protection. The hybrid Double Cab scores the same. XtraCab models have only a rollover rating so far. At the IIHS, the 2026 crew cab earns Good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests and for vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian front crash prevention, an Acceptable headlight rating, and a Marginal in the updated moderate overlap front test, where IIHS rated rear-passenger restraints and dummy kinematics Poor. It is not a Top Safety Pick.
That frontal record is the Tacoma's clearest weakness next to the Ford Ranger, which earns five frontal stars from NHTSA, and it is worth weighing if you regularly carry passengers in the back seat.
How we rated it: this review is based on Toyota's published specifications and October 2026 pricing, EPA estimates from fueleconomy.gov, and NHTSA and IIHS results available in October 2026. Drive Edition has not road-tested this vehicle.
