Lexus revealed an extensively updated NX compact crossover for 2027 on Sept. 1, and the biggest change is what it removes. Every 2027 NX is electrified, offered only as the NX 350h hybrid or the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid. Lexus says the updated model should reach global markets by the end of 2026, with grade details and pricing closer to the on-sale date.

Next-generation hybrid hardware

Both powertrains use a new e-Axle that combines the transaxle, motor and power control unit in one assembly, which Lexus says saves space and weight and lowers the center of gravity. Silicon carbide semiconductors in the inverter improve efficiency. Lexus also says revised battery management keeps engine speed from racing ahead of road speed under acceleration, for a more linear feel, and the engine block casting has been reinforced to cut noise and vibration.

The plug-in NX 450h+ gets a revised lithium-ion battery with 8 percent more output and 8 percent more capacity. Lexus estimates more than 40 miles of electric range on select grades; official EPA figures will come closer to launch. DC fast charging and a power charge port door are now standard on the plug-in. Lexus did not publish horsepower figures for either model.

The E-Four all-wheel-drive system gets revised rear-motor control that keeps it engaged during straight-line driving, not just at launch, in corners or when wheels slip. Lexus says that improves stability on snow and other low-grip surfaces.

Stiffer body, quicker steering

Engineers reinforced the front and rear of the unibody, added a floor cross member and redesigned the suspension towers. Versions without adaptive suspension get shock absorbers with ultra-low-speed valves. The steering wheel shrinks 0.4 inch to 14.2 inches in diameter, and every grade gets a variable-ratio steering rack. Tuning took place at Toyota's Shimoyama test center in Japan and at Germany's Nürburgring.

Design and cabin

Outside, the NX gets a mesh grille, black rather than chrome mirrors and trim, dual-line headlamps and the first use of Lexus' Double L taillight signature. New colors include Shaded Ivy and, for F Sport grades, Incognito. Inside, a 12.3-inch digital gauge display sits in line with a 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen that is now standard on every grade. F Sport models add 20-inch wheels, red brake calipers and an exclusive Radiant Red interior option.

Luxury and F Sport grades offer Sensory Concierge, which coordinates lighting, music, climate, seat temperature and one of three fragrances across three preset modes. Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 is standard, adding Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist and Intersection Turn Assist to the familiar suite, and a drive recorder is built in.

What buyers should know

Buyers who preferred a non-hybrid NX will need to look elsewhere, since every 2027 model is a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. In exchange, every NX gets the 14-inch screen, the newer hybrid hardware and the retuned chassis, and the plug-in adds standard DC fast charging and more battery capacity. Until Lexus releases prices and EPA ratings, it is too early to say how much the plug-in's extra electric range will cost over the regular hybrid.
