The compact hybrid SUV has become the sensible default for a lot of American households, and the reason shows up on the window sticker. Kelley Blue Book put the average transaction price of a compact SUV at $37,722 in August 2026. Every vehicle on this list offers a hybrid version with a starting MSRP below that figure, before destination, and the most efficient of them, the front-wheel-drive Toyota RAV4, carries a 43-mpg combined EPA rating.
Hybrids also matter more now that the federal tax picture has changed. The IRS says the new, used and commercial clean-vehicle credits are not available for vehicles acquired after Sept. 30, 2025. A conventional hybrid never depended on a plug or a credit to pay its way, and buyers have noticed: Toyota Motor North America said electrified models made up 57.4% of its third-quarter 2026 U.S. sales.

MSRPs exclude destination charges, which range from $1,475 to $1,595 among the brands that publish them here. *EPA rating for the 2026 Forester Hybrid; the 2027 rating was not yet listed on fueleconomy.gov in early October 2026.
Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid ($29,795). The cheapest way into this group is also one of the most efficient. Toyota lists the 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid S at $29,795 with all-wheel drive standard and 196 net combined horsepower, and the EPA rates it at 46 mpg city, 39 highway and 42 combined. It is assembled in Huntsville, Alabama. Shoppers who need maximum cargo room should compare it with the larger RAV4 and CR-V in person.
Kia Sportage Hybrid ($30,590). Kia priced the 2027 Sportage Hybrid LX FWD at $30,590 and added front-wheel-drive versions of the S ($31,290) and EX ($32,290) for the new model year. All-wheel drive starts with the S AWD at $32,890, and destination is $1,495. The EPA rates the front-drive version at 41 mpg combined and the AWD version at 35, the biggest all-wheel-drive penalty on this list. Kia's U.S.-assembly list for the Sportage excludes the hybrid, which matters for the tax deduction discussed below.
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid ($31,900). The sixth-generation 2026 RAV4 is sold only as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, and the hybrid now comes with front-wheel drive for the first time. The LE FWD starts at $31,900, the SE at $34,700, the XLE Premium at $36,100 and the AWD-only Woodland at $39,900. Front-drive models make 226 net horsepower and all-wheel-drive models 236. The EPA rates the RAV4 Hybrid FWD at 47 city, 40 highway and 43 combined; LE and SE AWD models at 42 combined; and the Woodland, with its all-terrain tires, at 38. Toyota builds RAV4 hybrids in Kentucky and Ontario, Canada.
Subaru Forester Hybrid ($34,730). Subaru held the 2027 Forester Premium Hybrid at $34,730, the same as the 2026 model, with the Sport Hybrid at $37,930 and the Limited Hybrid at $38,995. A new Wilderness Hybrid, with 9.3 inches of ground clearance and all-terrain tires, starts just above $40,000. Every Forester Hybrid uses Subaru's 194-horsepower hybrid boxer powertrain with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and the EPA rated the 2026 Forester Hybrid at 35 mpg combined. Subaru assembles the Forester in Lafayette, Indiana, and Gunma, Japan.
Mazda CX-50 Hybrid ($34,750). Mazda's hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with three electric motors and standard electric all-wheel drive for 219 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. The EPA rates it at 38 mpg combined, and Mazda quotes a 551-mile total driving range. It is built at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama, and Mazda's May 2026 price increases did not touch the CX-50 line. Destination is $1,595.
Honda CR-V Hybrid ($36,030). Honda's 2027 pricing puts the CR-V Sport Hybrid 2WD at $36,030, or $37,580 with the $1,550 destination charge. The Sport Hybrid AWD is $37,530, the TrailSport Hybrid $39,200 and the Sport-L Hybrid 2WD $39,125; the Sport Touring Hybrid, at $42,950, falls outside this list. EPA ratings are 43 city, 36 highway and 40 combined with front-wheel drive and 37 combined with all-wheel drive. For comparison, the gas-only CR-V LX 2WD is rated at 30 mpg combined.
How to choose between them
- Decide on all-wheel drive first. The Corolla Cross, CX-50 and Forester include it; on the RAV4 it costs 1 mpg in the EPA combined rating, on the CR-V 3 mpg and on the Sportage 6 mpg.
- Check where the specific vehicle was assembled. The car-loan interest deduction for 2025 through 2028 applies only to new vehicles with final assembly in the United States, and the IRS says buyers can confirm that on the vehicle label, through the VIN or with NHTSA's VIN decoder. RAV4 hybrids come from Kentucky or Ontario and Foresters from Indiana or Japan, so two identical-looking SUVs can qualify differently.
- Don't budget extra for hybrid upkeep. The Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center says maintenance needs for conventional hybrids are similar to those of gas vehicles.
- Compare like-for-like trims. Honda, Mazda and Subaru start their hybrid lineups above their cheapest gas models, so part of any price gap reflects different equipment.
How we chose
We limited this guide to compact and small SUVs with a conventional, non-plug-in hybrid whose cheapest hybrid trim starts below $40,000 before destination. Prices come from manufacturer pricing releases and consumer sites current in October 2026, and fuel economy figures come from the EPA's fueleconomy.gov database or the manufacturer's EPA-based statements. Drive Edition has not road-tested these vehicles, so the ranking reflects price, efficiency and standard equipment rather than driving impressions.
