Starting in November 2026, BMW will roll out BMW Maps with Driver Assistance for vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System X. This new feature integrates route guidance, the vehicle’s surroundings, and active driver assistance information into a single 3D display on the central screen. Drivers will be able to see their next navigation step alongside how the car perceives its environment and which assistance functions are active to support driving.

The 3D view shows the vehicle’s exact position within its lane and at the correct road level, which helps drivers navigate complex scenarios such as highways, intersections, and city traffic. It also clarifies how semi-automated and assisted driving functions relate to the current situation on the road.

How BMW Maps with Driver Assistance supports driving

One key driver assistance function displayed is Highway Assistant, which enables hands-free driving on highways at speeds up to 85 mph. This system controls both speed and steering and supports automated lane changes after the driver confirms by a glance. When combined with active route guidance from BMW Maps, Highway Assistant can assist drivers continuously from highway on-ramps to exits.

The integration of navigation and driver assistance is designed to give drivers better orientation during active assistance, especially in complex traffic conditions. The feature was developed by BMW in collaboration with Mapbox, using precise map data, vehicle sensors, and artificial intelligence.

What it means for you

If you own or plan to buy a BMW equipped with Operating System X, expect a more intuitive driving experience starting November 2026. Instead of switching between separate displays or guessing what assistance systems are doing, you’ll see a combined 3D view that clearly shows your position on the road, upcoming navigation instructions, and how driver aids are working in real time.

This feature will be especially helpful on highways where hands-free driving is possible with Highway Assistant, giving you confidence about lane positioning and upcoming maneuvers. It also adds clarity in city traffic and intersections by showing how the vehicle senses its surroundings and assists you.

BMW Maps with Driver Assistance is available only with Highway Assistant or Highway & Commuting Assistant in select countries, cities, and roads, with rollout happening in phases. The feature is a step toward more integrated and intelligent vehicle guidance, combining navigation and driver assistance in a way that makes driving easier and safer.
