FCA US, the company behind Ram, is recalling 8,329 model-year 2026 Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickups because a steering column control module can develop an internal fault that turns off electronic stability control, the system that brakes individual wheels to help keep a truck from sliding or spinning out. The campaign is NHTSA recall 26V-651, FCA recall 90D. FCA filed it with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Oct. 6, 2026, and the trucks' VINs became searchable on NHTSA's lookup tool on Oct. 13.
Because federal safety standard FMVSS No. 126 requires stability control to stay active while a vehicle is driven, FCA filed the recall as a noncompliance. In its safety report, the company said a module with the fault may cause the loss of stability control "when intervention is expected and/or relied upon," which can raise the risk of a crash.
Which trucks are affected
The recall covers 2026 Ram 2500 trucks built from Sept. 13, 2025, through Nov. 15, 2025, the window when the suspect modules were used on the assembly line. FCA estimates that only about 0.1% of the trucks actually have the defect. Trucks built outside that period, fixed before they left the plant or already repaired under an earlier recall are not included.
The part is the steering column control module, made by Kostal of America in Troy, Mich., under part numbers 68600228AH, 68600229AH and 68600231AH. Drivers get no warning before it fails. When the module resets, the stability control light comes on in the instrument cluster.
A second recall for the same module
This is the second time FCA has recalled 2026 Ram 2500s for this module. In April it filed NHTSA recall 26V-244 (FCA 36D) for 6,605 trucks with the same condition, and owner letters for that campaign went out May 7. According to the new filing, FCA's safety and compliance office opened a fresh investigation on July 20 after its ongoing monitoring flagged trucks built with suspect modules outside the first recall's scope. It reviewed field and customer-assistance records through September, identified a build issue on Sept. 2 and decided on Sept. 29 that the trucks did not comply with the standard. Together, the two campaigns cover 14,934 trucks.

What owners should do
Dealers will replace the steering column control module with a redesigned part at no charge. FCA planned to notify dealers on or about Oct. 13 and to begin mailing owner letters on or about Nov. 24. NHTSA's record does not advise owners to stop driving or to park outside. FCA's filing says its general reimbursement plan on file applies to the campaign.
Owners can enter their 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to check whether their truck is included, or call FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and refer to recall 90D. If the stability control warning light comes on while driving, leave extra room for braking and cornering, especially on wet or loose roads or while towing, and contact a Ram dealer.
