Rivian is recalling 98,828 vehicles because a pop-up alert on the center display can cover the rearview camera image when the driver shifts into reverse. The recall covers 2022–2027 R1S SUVs, 2022–2026 R1T pickups and 2027 R2 SUVs. Rivian reported it to NHTSA on September 16, 2026, and the agency assigned recall number 26V-597. Rivian's own number is FSAM-1866. Unlike most recalls, the fix is already out: Rivian says an over-the-air software update has reached more than 95% of the affected vehicles.
Because the camera image may not appear at the start of a backing event, the vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, "Rear Visibility." Rivian found the condition during its own internal testing and says it is not aware of any customer reports, crashes, injuries or deaths linked to it.
A rare sequence of steps
The problem needs a specific chain of events, according to Rivian's Part 573 report. The driver has to have stability control switched off in certain drive modes, leave the vehicle for a period of time and then return. At that point the center display may show a safety alert saying stability control is off and asking whether the driver wants to switch back to a mode with it on, a prompt that exists to meet FMVSS 126, the federal stability control standard. If the driver shifts into reverse without answering, the drive-mode notification can sit on top of the camera image until the vehicle starts to move, at which point the image appears.
Rivian notes that a missing rear image would be noticeable to the driver. Selecting the camera page on the center display brings it back, as does the vehicle beginning to move. The affected software is any version earlier than 2026.23 on R1 models and earlier than 2026.31.40 on the R2.

The suspect period runs from August 23, 2021, when Rivian began building vehicles with the affected software, to August 10, 2026, when it stopped. That sweeps in nearly every R1 built in that span plus 2,481 of the new R2 SUVs. Rivian estimates that every vehicle in the population has the software in question. Vehicles built after August 10 have the corrected version.
The fix
The remedy is a free over-the-air software update, and it is already available for every affected vehicle. As of the filing, 95% of affected R1 vehicles and 96% of affected R2s had installed it. Rivian is encouraging all owners to update to the latest available software if they have not done so. No service visit is needed.
Rivian expects to mail owner notification letters by November 9, 2026, the same day VINs become searchable on NHTSA.gov. NHTSA's record carries no "park it" or "park outside" advisory. Owners with questions can call Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261.
