The redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is now in production. General Motors has started building the next-generation light-duty Silverado and its GMC Sierra twin at its Silao Assembly plant in Mexico, CEO Mary Barra told analysts on GM's third-quarter earnings call on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The first trucks from Silao are expected to reach dealerships late in the fourth quarter, according to a summary of the call published by MarketBeat.
Silao is building the new trucks ahead of any GM plant in the U.S. Mexico Now reported on Oct. 13, citing GM Authority, that the first units off the line were crew cabs and that Silao will be the only plant building the new models for the rest of 2026.
When U.S. plants join, and why output stays flat
Fort Wayne Assembly in Indiana is scheduled to start building the new trucks in January, after four planned weeks of downtime, and Orion Assembly in Michigan is due to follow in the second quarter of 2027, according to the call summary. Mexico Now reported that Silao will build crew cab and regular cab trucks, while Fort Wayne will build crew cabs and double cabs.
The changeover will cost volume. Barra said GM expects to build about the same number of full-size pickups in 2027 as in 2026 because of launch downtime across three assembly plants and three engine plants, with added capacity, including Orion's, arriving in 2028. GM also expects fourth-quarter gas pickup output to fall by roughly 35,000 trucks from a year earlier because of the launch.
There is a lot riding on it. Combined Silverado and Sierra sales rose 9% in the third quarter compared with a year earlier, CarBuzz reported, and full-size pickups carried GM's profit for the quarter. "We're focused on a flawless launch. It's on track right now," Barra said on the call, according to CarBuzz.
What the new Silverado costs
Chevrolet's website lists the 2027 Silverado 1500 as available in late 2026 and shows starting prices for seven versions. Every trim gets a 10-speed automatic. The four engines are an enhanced 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder, new 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V8s, and a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel. Chevrolet quotes up to 501 lb-ft of torque and up to 13,700 pounds of towing.

Super Cruise grows, and the hybrid question stays open
GM is betting on more buyers using its hands-free driver-assistance system. Super Cruise is standard on the top trims and optional on most others, and GM expects the share of full-size trucks sold with it to grow four to five times in 2027, according to the call summary.
What GM has not promised is a hybrid Silverado. Barra said GM will offer hybrids "in multiple segments" without naming the Silverado or Sierra, CarBuzz reported. For now, shoppers who want one of the first new trucks should expect Mexican-built crew cabs this winter, with double cabs from Indiana coming in 2027.
