Federal safety regulators have opened a review that could pull hundreds of thousands more GMC Sierra 1500 pickups into an old recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Office of Defects Investigation opened recall query RQ26003 on October 9, 2026, covering an estimated 535,639 Sierra 1500 trucks from the 2022, 2023 and 2024 model years.

The issue is the upper grille deflector, the trim piece across the top of the grille. NHTSA says it has received 118 complaints that the part came off while the truck was being driven. In some cases, owners reported a cracked windshield, and in others, surrounding drivers had to swerve to avoid the debris. The agency describes the problem as detachment "without detectability," with potential damage to the truck itself, to nearby vehicles and motorcyclists, and to pedestrians.
